Maximising Short Getaways: Making the Most of Weekend Escapes

In today’s fast-paced world, taking a break doesn’t always mean a long vacation. Short getaways, such as weekend trips, can provide a refreshing change of scenery and help you recharge without requiring extensive time off. With the right planning and mindset, you can make the most of these brief escapes. In this blog post, we’ll explore strategies to maximise your short getaways and create memorable experiences.

Choose Proximity

This is probably the most obvious point, but selecting a destination that is either a comfortable drive or a short flight away is a major consideration when making the most of a short break! Look for charming towns, coastal getaways, or nearby cities that you’ve been curious about. We actually have a great selection of 3 and 4-night mini-break destinations with flight times ranging from 2-4 hours, making them the perfect choice for someone on limited time!

Plan Ahead

When I was younger with no real responsibilities my favourite thing in the world was to arrive at a new destination with no real plan and just see where life takes me… However, nowadays I don’t have the luxury of all that free time so when I am visiting a new place I love to research and plan as much as possible to make the most out of my time there! Creating a detailed itinerary, breaking down your days into morning, afternoon, and evening activities is a great way of making sure you get to experience everything the destination has to offer. Since your time is limited, knowing what you want to do each moment ensures you make the most of every hour.

Travel Light

Ditch the large check-in bags! Unless I am going away for a long period of time, I always stick to my trusty hand luggage. Packing only the essentials and focusing on mix-and-match outfits will not only save you space but also precious travel time. This lessens the hassle of checking in luggage, allowing you to breeze through airports and maximise your on-the-ground experiences. You’ll be surprised just how much you can fit into a hand luggage bag!

Prioritise Activities

Research and list down attractions and activities that resonate with you the most. These are the experiences you wouldn’t want to miss during your limited stay. Prioritising helps you focus on what truly matters to you. For me, when visiting a new city I have four things I make sure I do every time: Visit a landmark, find a beautiful vista of the city, scoop out a cool restaurant/bar/cafe, and check out either a gallery or museum.

Consider Off-Peak Travel

If you have the luxury of a flexible always opt for weekdays or shoulder seasons to avoid the tourist rush. Not only will you enjoy shorter lines and less crowded attractions, but you’ll also find that accommodations and activities are often more affordable.

Book Strategic Accommodations

Choose accommodations that are centrally located or near major transportation hubs. Being in the heart of the action minimises travel time, allowing you to jump straight into exploration. When selecting accommodation for our mini break experiences, we always look for the most central locations making it easier for our guests to get out and explore.

Mini breaks are tailor-made for those who have limited time but a strong desire to explore. They’re an opportunity to escape the daily routine without needing to take lengthy vacations. Whether it’s a quick weekend escape or a short midweek break, these trips are ideal for people with busy schedules, allowing them to experience new places and cultures without major disruptions to their routines. By following the strategies mentioned above, you can ensure that every minute of your mini break getaway is optimised for adventure, relaxation, and memorable experiences. You can check out all our amazing mini-trips here! For any other questions or queries, you can reach us at info@untravelledpaths.com.

9 Places in Brasov you can’t miss, according to a local!

We recently asked our most colourful team member Cristina what her favourite must-see spots in her hometown of Beautiful Brasov – What better way to discover the hidden gems of a place than through a local’s eyes. Take it away Cristina!

As your friendly local guide, I’m happy to take you on a personalised journey through the most captivating spots and experiences that make Brasov an absolute gem of a destination! So, put on your comfiest shoes, get your taste buds ready for a treat, and let’s dive into this unforgettable adventure together!

1. Tampa Mountain – Nature’s Playground:

Picture this – the city below, the Carpathian Mountains in the distance, and a cool breeze whispering through the trees… It’s a sight you’ll remember forever! Rising 960 meters above sea level, the mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque city and its surroundings. You’ve got two awesome choices to reach the top here: a heart-pumping 2 hours hike or a thrilling 15-minute cable car ride to the top. Either way, the view is jaw-dropping! Hiking enthusiasts can embark on various trails leading to the mountain’s summit, where they can enjoy the reward of a magnificent view over Brasov. The ascent is well worth it, especially during sunset or sunrise, as the city and surrounding Carpathian Mountains are bathed in golden hues. Additionally, Tampa Mountain is home to diverse flora and fauna, making it an excellent spot for nature lovers and birdwatchers.

2. The Black Tower (Turnul Negru) – A Journey Back in Time:

Once upon a time, Brasov used to be a fortress and traces of its ancient walls can still be seen today. The Black Tower, also known as Turnul Negru in Romanian, is a historic landmark located in Brasov, Romania. It is one of the city’s medieval defensive towers that were part of the fortified walls surrounding the old town. Throughout its history, the tower has served various purposes, including a guard tower, a storage facility, and even a temporary prison. As you climb The Black Tower’s staircase, which boasts around 150 steps, you’ll not only be treated to panoramic views of the city but also get a glimpse of the city’s past through these remnants of its fortified history.

3. Gelato Mania – Hello, Sweet Heaven!

Be warned, there’s usually a huge queue waiting for you! Patience is the key, and trust me, waiting for about half an hour is absolutely worth it as their delectable gelato will transport you to taste bud paradise. My absolute favourite flavour to get is chocolate chili, it’ll definitely spice up your life!

4. La Ograda – Where Flavour Dreams Come True

La Ograda is a cozy little spot and my top pick to eat in Brasov. This charming restaurant offers a delightful fusion of Transylvanian dishes with a Hungarian twist. To top it off, Romania’s wines pair perfectly with the food, making it a culinary experience like no other.

5. Obscuria Escape Room – Unlock the Mystery!

Gather your buddies and get ready for an adrenaline-pumping challenge. Can you crack the code, unravel the mysteries, and beat the clock? It’s an adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat, laughing, and bonding with your team, and is a favourite activity of mine and my friends!

6. Club 13 – Where the Night Comes Alive!

As the sun sets, embrace this trendy cocktail bar that also offers shishas. It’s a favorite among the younger crowd, offering a lively atmosphere filled with music, dancing, and unforgettable moments. Don’t miss the chance to try my favorite, Espresso Martini.

7. Tales of Communism Museum – A Glimpse into the Past:

As you explore the exhibits, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Romania’s resilience and the impact of this historical period on its people. But here’s the twist – this museum presents communism in a fun and engaging way! Through interactive displays and immersive storytelling, you’ll find yourself absorbed in the era’s nuances, leaving you with an eye-opening experience that will linger in your thoughts long after you leave.

8. The Council Square – Brasov’s Beating Heart:

The colorful buildings, the lively atmosphere, and the friendly faces will make you feel right at home. Grab a seat, people-watch, and soak in the wonderful vibes of this buzzing square. You might also be lucky enough to pet some adorable doggos, as Brasov is a dog-friendly city.

9. First Romanian School Museum – A Journey of Learning:

This remarkable destination unveils the beginnings of education in Romania, showcasing ancient textbooks and handwritten manuscripts. One of the highlights you won’t want to miss is the wooden press they have on display. This historic press played a crucial role in printing some of the earliest Romanian books, preserving knowledge and culture for generations to come.

Bonus: Hike to Malaiesti Mountain – Nature’s Masterpiece:

As a local guide, I can’t help but share my personal favourite spot – Malaiesti Mountain. This hiking paradise promises a breathtaking spectacle of nature’s beauty. As you ascend, the Carpathian Mountains reveal their majestic grandeur, and the untouched landscapes will leave you in awe. After 3 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the cozy Malaiesti chalet, where you can enjoy a well-deserved lunch and toast with Romanian palinca.
