How to Travel Europe Unconventionally

Europe is brimming with iconic landmarks, grand capitals and well-worn tourist trails. But what if you’re after something a little different? Something that doesn’t involve battling selfie sticks at the Eiffel Tower or queuing for hours to see the Colosseum?

If you’re the kind of traveller who prefers winding cobbled streets over crowded boulevards, and secret viewpoints over packed city tours, this guide is for you.

Here’s how to travel Europe unconventionally and discover a side of the continent few others get to see.

1. Choose the road less travelled

Let’s start with the basics: skip the obvious. Instead of Paris or Rome, why not try Ljubljana, Tirana or Sarajevo? These cities may be smaller in size but they’re big on charm, culture and stories.

Swap Spain’s Costa del Sol for northern Albania’s beaches, or the Alps for the Carpathians in Romania. Not only will you find fewer tourists, but you’ll also enjoy more authentic encounters and better value for money.

👉 Untravelled Paths tip: Our European destinations are packed with under-the-radar destinations waiting to be explored.

2. Travel by nature, not by guidebook

Unconventional travel means embracing spontaneity and tuning into your surroundings. Rather than ticking off a checklist, plan your trip around natural wonders: think the Danube Delta’s birdwatching paradise, the lakes of Montenegro, or wild bear tracking in Transylvania.

Go where the forests are thickest, the rivers flow fastest, and the wildlife still calls the shots.

3. Stay local, eat local

One of the best ways to travel unconventionally in Europe is by choosing locally-owned guesthouses, boutique stays, and traditional farmhouses over international hotel chains. You’ll get a true taste of the culture (sometimes literally) and directly support local communities.

And when it comes to food, skip the TripAdvisor top 10. Ask a local, follow your nose, or join a cooking class. You might end up eating home-cooked goulash with a family in a Hungarian village or foraging for mushrooms in the Montenegrin hills.

4. Embrace slow travel

Europe isn’t going anywhere fast – so neither should you. Instead of rushing from one capital to another, focus on a single region and immerse yourself. Whether it’s hiking across the Bucegi Mountains, exploring forgotten villages in Bosnia, or taking a boat through the reed-lined channels of the Danube Delta, slow travel lets you connect more deeply with the people and the places.

It’s also kinder to the planet – so it’s a win-win.

5. Join an unconventional experience

Sometimes, the best way to get off the beaten track is with someone who’s already done it. That’s where we come in. At Untravelled Paths, we design curious, curated experiences that give you the freedom to explore, without the stress of planning.

Whether you’re searching for the Northern Lights in Finland, taking a desert safari in Morocco, or sailing to the sunken ruins of Albania’s Lake Koman, we specialise in the weird, the wonderful, and the wildly underrated.

6. Go in the off-season

Want Europe all to yourself? Travel in shoulder seasons (spring or autumn), or even the depths of winter. Snow-covered castles, frostbitten forests and cosy mountain lodges are pure magic – and you’ll have them mostly to yourself.

Plus, flights and accommodation are often cheaper, and locals have more time to share their stories.

7. Say yes more often

Sometimes, the most unconventional travel moments happen when you say “yes” to the unexpected. A lift from a stranger, a glass of homemade wine, a detour down a gravel path that doesn’t appear on Google Maps.

Unconventional travel isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about being open to the unknown, and enjoying the journey as much as the destination.

Ready to experience Europe differently?

Whether you’re drawn to wild nature, rich cultures or simply a slower pace, unconventional travel opens up a world of possibilities. And with Untravelled Paths, you can do it all with a curious spirit – and a cup of local coffee in hand.

Explore our unusual Europe experiences here and start planning a trip that tells a story worth sharing.

Where to Travel in Winter Without the Crowds

Winter in Europe is often seen as a time for festive city breaks and bustling ski resorts – but what if you want something quieter? Fewer tourists, more charm, and a proper chance to breathe?

Whether you’re dreaming of snow-covered mountains, coastal calm or just somewhere special that isn’t rammed with people, this guide is for you. We’ve handpicked the best places to travel in winter without the crowds – including some of our favourite Untravelled Paths experiences and a few underrated gems worth adding to your list.

1. Transylvania, Romania – Castles, Cobblestones and Carpathian Charm

If you’re after a true winter wonderland without the selfie sticks, Transylvania is calling. Imagine frosty forests, medieval villages and fairytale castles all dusted with snow. It’s atmospheric, affordable and blissfully uncrowded.

Explore the UNESCO-listed town of Sighișoara, discover Bran Castle (the one linked to Dracula), or even go bear tracking in the Carpathians. And for the brave? Try spending the night in our Ice Hotel Experience, complete with fur blankets and hot wine on tap.

Why go: Magical scenery, rich folklore, and hardly a tour group in sight.

2. Kotor, Montenegro – Coastal Beauty Without the Buzz

Summer in Kotor is stunning, but also hectic. Winter, however, offers the same dramatic fjord-like views, with empty streets and peaceful vibes.

Stroll the ancient city walls, hike to the fortress above the bay, or enjoy fresh seafood by a quiet waterfront. It’s a rare chance to see Montenegro’s Adriatic coast without the cruise ships and crowds.

Untravelled Paths tip: Pair Kotor with a visit to Lovćen National Park or the bioluminescent Blue Cave, both equally magical in winter light.

3. The Azores, Portugal – Europe’s Off-Season Island Escape

For something a little different, head to the Azores—Portugal’s remote Atlantic archipelago. With volcanic peaks, thermal springs and lush green valleys, the islands feel like a cross between Iceland and Hawaii.

Winter is their off-season, meaning you’ll get the landscapes (and hot springs!) largely to yourself. It’s mild, quiet and full of surprises—ideal for a nature-focused winter trip without freezing temperatures.

Best for: Nature lovers, hikers, and anyone who wants to escape the cold without leaving Europe.

4. The Albanian Alps – Snowy Peaks and Solitude

If you’re craving mountains without the mass tourism, look no further than the Albanian Alps. This remote corner of Europe is a dream for adventurous travellers seeking silence, snow and seriously underrated views.

Winter hikes here are raw and real – think icy trails, dramatic peaks and warm village hospitality. Stay in a traditional guesthouse, tuck into hearty local stews, and enjoy a slower, simpler way of life.

Why it’s special: It feels like stepping into Europe before the crowds arrived.

5. Lofoten Islands, Norway – Arctic Beauty Without the Tourists

Sure, Norway is no secret—but in Lofoten, even the high season feels peaceful. Come winter, it’s pure magic: snow-draped mountains, frozen fjords and the chance to see the Northern Lights dancing overhead.

While many travellers head to Tromsø, the Lofoten Islands remain less visited and more dramatic. Rent a fisherman’s cabin (a rorbu), try your hand at snowshoeing, and enjoy the silence of the Arctic Circle.

Best for: Photographers, aurora hunters, and lovers of wild, remote landscapes.

6. The Danube Delta, Romania – Winter Wildlife and Complete Tranquillity

Yes, it’s a little unexpected – but winter in the Danube Delta is peaceful, eerie and full of natural beauty. The waterways are quiet, the birds are abundant, and the entire region feels like a still, misty dream.

With traditional fishing villages, delicious home-cooked food and plenty of wildlife, it’s perfect for those who want a wild winter escape with no crowds, no rush and no distractions.

Top tip: Wrap up warm and bring your binoculars – it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise.

7. Lake Bled, Slovenia – Fairytale Vibes Minus the Crowds

Lake Bled is a summer Instagram hotspot, but visit in winter and you’ll find a whole new kind of beauty. The lake often freezes, the surrounding Alps sparkle with snow, and the church on the island looks straight out of a storybook.

Stay in a lakeside chalet, walk the perimeter trail with barely another soul in sight, and enjoy Slovenia’s alpine charm without the stress.

Why go: It’s fairytale Europe, minus the bus tours.

8. Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina – A Soulful Winter City Break

If you want a winter city break that’s full of atmosphere but light on crowds, Sarajevo is a brilliant choice. The city’s blend of East and West – Ottoman bazaars, Austro-Hungarian buildings, and striking minarets – is even more charming under a dusting of snow.

Enjoy Bosnian coffee in a cosy café, ride the cable car to the mountains, or hit the nearby ski slopes without the price tag or queues you’d find in the Alps.

Untravelled Paths tip: Sarajevo is also great combined with Mostar and the wider Herzegovina region for an extended Balkan winter adventure.

Final Thoughts: Travel Differently This Winter

Winter doesn’t have to mean overbooked city breaks or crowded ski resorts. With the right destination, it’s a chance to see Europe in a new light—quiet, authentic and far more magical than you might expect.

At Untravelled Paths, we’re passionate about uncovering experiences that feel personal, immersive and a little off the beaten track. Whether it’s sleeping in an ice hotel, hiking through the Albanian Alps, or gliding down a snowy river in the Danube Delta, we’ve got your winter escape covered. Just get in touch and we’ll get it organised for you. Also keep a look out for our new Winter Slovenia & Spa or our Winter Sarajevo Mini Adventures which are due to be released in the coming weeks.

From Caves to Coast: Montenegro for the Adventurous Traveller

Nestled between rugged mountains and the sparkling Adriatic Sea, Montenegro is a dream come true for those who crave adventure. While its medieval towns and scenic beaches draw the crowds, this Balkan beauty has far more to offer beneath the surface – literally. From mysterious cave networks to adrenaline-pumping coastal activities, Montenegro promises off-the-beaten-path thrills for the adventurous traveller.

Hike to High-Altitude Marvels

Durmitor National Park – A Paradise for Hikers

Montenegro’s mountainous north is a haven for trekking enthusiasts. Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts over 200km of marked trails winding through alpine meadows, deep canyons, and glacial lakes. Brave the climb to Bobotov Kuk (2,523m) – Montenegro’s highest peak – for sweeping views that stretch as far as neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tara River Canyon – Europe’s Deepest

For heart-racing beauty, hike along the Tara River Canyon – the deepest in Europe. This dramatic gorge slices through Durmitor like a natural skyscraper, with sheer cliffs and turquoise waters below. It’s also home to one of Montenegro’s best-kept secrets: the thrilling zipline over the Tara River. A must for any adrenaline junkie!

Hit the Coast for Sea Adventures

Kayak the Bay of Kotor

While many admire the Bay of Kotor from charming old towns like Perast or Kotor itself, adventurers take to the water. Kayaking offers a unique perspective of this fjord-like bay, where towering cliffs rise from the water’s edge and secret coves hide pebbled beaches. Paddle your way to the island church of Our Lady of the Rocks or simply drift beneath a setting sun.

Best Time to Go: May to October for calm seas and warm weather.

Cliff Jumping and Snorkelling near Budva

The Budva Riviera isn’t just about beach bars and sun loungers. Just a short swim from the coast, you’ll find dramatic cliffs perfect for leaping into the sea. Mogren Beach and the hidden beaches near Petrovac offer safe spots for cliff diving and crystal-clear waters for snorkelling. Keep an eye out for marine life and underwater caves carved into the limestone coast.

Go White-Water Rafting on the Tara River

No Montenegro adventure is complete without tackling the rapids of the Tara River. Spring meltwater turns the river into a churning ribbon of white-water – perfect for a high-octane rafting trip through jaw-dropping scenery. Most tours include overnight stays in rustic riverside cabins, traditional meals, and the chance to bond with fellow adventurers around a campfire.

Don’t Miss: The section of the river near the Tara Bridge, one of the most photographed spots in Montenegro.

Explore Hidden Underground Worlds

Lipa Cave – Montenegro’s Subterranean Wonder

Just a short drive from the old royal capital of Cetinje, Lipa Cave is one of Montenegro’s largest and most accessible cave systems. A guided tour takes you deep underground, where you’ll walk amongst surreal stalactite formations, eerie chambers, and underground rivers. The cool temperatures make it a refreshing break from the summer sun, while the torch-lit pathways add a touch of mystery to your adventure.

Top Tip: Visit in spring or early autumn for fewer crowds and comfortable weather. Pair your cave visit with a stroll around Cetinje for a perfect day trip.

Adventure Caving in Đalovića Gorge

Fancy something more rugged? Head to Đalovića Gorge near Bijelo Polje in northern Montenegro. Here lies a labyrinth of unexplored caves, including the legendary Djalovica Cave – one of the longest in the Balkans. This area is ideal for experienced cavers and those looking for true wilderness. Expect rope descents, underground waterfalls, and total darkness (save for your headlamp).

Note: Due to the technical difficulty, we recommend going with a certified guide or local adventure tour operator.

Practical Tips for Adventurous Travellers

  • When to visit: Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the best conditions for outdoor activities with fewer tourists.
  • What to pack: Good walking boots, quick-dry clothing, a waterproof jacket, and a spirit of adventure.
  • Getting around: Hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore Montenegro’s wilder corners at your own pace.
  • Local guides: For activities like rafting, caving, or climbing, book with experienced local guides to ensure safety and gain insider knowledge.

Why Choose Montenegro for Your Next Adventure?

Montenegro combines wild beauty, rich culture, and thrilling activities in one compact country. Whether you’re abseiling into a cave, conquering a mountain peak, or paddling into the sunset, you’ll find that adventure comes naturally here.

So if you’re looking for a destination that balances adrenaline with authenticity – Montenegro might just be your next unforgettable escape.

Top Tips for Travelling Off-Peak

Save money, dodge the crowds and see Europe differently with these smart travel tips.

Travelling off-peak is one of the best ways to make the most of your holiday. Not only can you save on flights and accommodation, but you’ll enjoy quieter attractions, more authentic experiences and often better service too. Whether you’re planning a cultural city break or an adventure into nature, travelling outside the high season lets you see a destination in its true light. Here are our top tips for getting the best out of your off-peak adventures.

1. Be Flexible with Your Dates

Flexibility is your biggest advantage when travelling off-peak. Shoulder seasons like spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) still offer great weather in many European destinations, without the inflated prices and packed crowds of summer. Midweek departures often cost less than weekend flights, and staying that extra day or two can unlock hidden gems you might otherwise miss.

2. Check Local Holidays and Festivals

Off-peak in one country might coincide with peak in another due to national holidays or festivals. Always check the local calendar before booking – it could be the difference between a peaceful retreat and a surprise street party! Of course, if you’re keen to experience a local celebration, off-peak travel can be a great way to do it with fewer tourists.

3. Pack Smart for the Season

Travelling outside summer? Layers are your friend. Weather can be more unpredictable in the off-peak months, but with the right gear – waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes and a few warm layers – you’ll be ready for anything. Plus, less-crowded sights and cooler temperatures often mean better hiking, exploring and photography opportunities.

4. Embrace the Slower Pace

Off-peak travel encourages you to slow down and savour the experience. With fewer queues and less pressure to “see it all”, you can enjoy longer chats with locals, take your time over meals, and discover the real rhythm of a place. It’s the perfect opportunity to ditch the checklist and truly unwind.

5. Choose Smaller or Lesser-Known Destinations

Off-peak is the ideal time to visit smaller towns or emerging destinations. You’ll avoid the seasonal closures that sometimes affect remote areas in winter, and get a far more personal experience. At Untravelled Paths, we specialise in lesser-known spots that are just as beautiful outside peak season – often more so.

6. Book Early – Or Very Late

For the best prices, either plan well in advance or keep an eye out for last-minute deals. Many off-peak destinations offer discounted rates on hotels, experiences and transport. If you’re booking with a tour company, look for off-season offers, we often run October or March specials that are perfect for smart travellers.

7. Support Local Where You Can

Off-peak travel is great for local communities. Your visit during quieter months helps support businesses that rely on tourism year-round. Stay in locally-owned guesthouses, eat at family-run restaurants, and buy from small artisan shops – you’ll get a more authentic experience and help keep these places thriving.

8. Enjoy the Unique Vibes of Off-Peak

There’s something magical about seeing a destination outside its busiest season. You might have a castle all to yourself, see wildlife you’d miss in summer, or stroll through quiet cobbled streets without tour groups in sight. These moments – unhurried, uncrowded, and unexpected – are often the ones you’ll treasure most.

Make the Most of the Off-Peak Advantage

Travelling off-peak isn’t just about saving money, it’s about seeing places at their most genuine. Whether you’re after a quiet escape, cultural immersion or just better value, the off-season offers an entirely different, and often better, way to travel.

At Untravelled Paths, we design our trips with the magic of off-peak in mind. Many of our experiences run in the quieter months, giving you the chance to discover hidden gems without the hustle and bustle. So why wait for summer?

The Tragic Lesson in Romania: Why We Must Respect Wildlife

In early July, news broke of a heartbreaking incident in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains: an Italian tourist, Omar Farang Zin, lost his life after approaching a wild brown bear in an attempt to take a selfie. The 39-year-old ignored warning signs and ventured too close, and the consequences were fatal.

This tragedy has shocked locals and international travellers alike, and it serves as a sobering reminder of one vital truth: nature is wild — and should always be treated with caution and respect.

The Dangers of Getting Too Close

Romania is home to the largest population of brown bears in Europe. These magnificent animals are beautiful, powerful and unpredictable. While sightings can be thrilling, they are not domesticated, and should never be approached, especially for photos or selfies.

Unfortunately, stories like Omar’s are becoming more common as travellers increasingly seek “close encounters” for social media. But no photo is worth risking your life.

At Untravelled Paths, we encourage genuine connections with nature, but always from a safe and respectful distance.

How We Keep Our Guests Safe

We offer bear-watching experiences in Romania, particularly in the forests surrounding Transylvania and the Carpathian Mountains. However, these are carefully managed by experienced wildlife experts, and guest safety is always our top priority.

Here’s how we ensure that:

  • Professional guides: All our bear experiences are led by qualified, local wildlife experts who know the terrain, bear behaviour, and how to safely navigate the wilderness.
  • Armed protection: Our guides carry approved deterrents, including noise-makers and pepper spray. They are also legally licensed to carry a firearm, which would only ever be used as a last resort.
  • Respect for wildlife: Our tours are designed to observe bears from a safe distance, often from hides or protected viewing points. This ensures that both the animals and our guests remain undisturbed.

By prioritising safety, education and conservation, we give our guests a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience that’s both unforgettable and responsible.

Wild Nature Isn’t a Zoo

One of the reasons Romania is such a unique travel destination is its raw, unspoilt nature. But with that beauty comes unpredictability. Brown bears are not tame. They are not part of a show. And while bear attacks are rare, they often happen when humans overstep boundaries.

We believe in sustainable tourism that protects the habitats we visit and the people who travel with us. That means setting clear expectations, listening to expert guidance, and always putting safety first.

Final Thoughts: Travel Responsibly

Omar Farang Zin’s death is a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to his family and friends. We hope his story encourages other travellers to think twice before getting too close to wildlife, whether in Romania or anywhere else in the world.
