Lucys European Escapades: Unveiling Her Favourite Must-Visit Destinations

Get ready to immerse yourself in the captivating charm of Europe as I share my personal travel highlight! From the sun-kissed beauty of Andalusia and the haunting allure of Transylvania to the fairytale town of Tallinn and the enchanting landscapes of Finland, these destinations have truly stolen my heart! Read ahead to hopefully inspire your next trip!

Andalusia, Spain

Having spent the past 12 years flying back and forth into Malaga to visit my dad I’ve definitely had the opportunity to spend a great deal of time exploring everything Andalusia has to offer. This sun-kissed region of Spain is such a special place to me, filled with vibrant bustling cities, quaint white-washed villages all melded together in history and culture. My dad lives in the very beautiful coastal town of Nerja, just over an hour from Granada, and is the perfect place to soak up the sun! I absolutely love visiting in the cooler months when crowds are few and the unbearable heat has subsided, as we have a tradition where each time I visit we explore a new part of Andalusia. Whether that be the unique Setenil de las Bodegas, a town built into a rock overhang that seems to define the laws of physics, or marvelling at the craftsmanship of the Puente Nuevo otherwise known as the ‘new bridge’ in the mountaintop town of Ronda, or even conquering my fear of heights when walking along the Caminito del Rey, the sights are endless! I’ve also been lucky enough to visit both Granada and Seville a few times too and highly recommend experiencing both cities. The Alhambra in Granada is a true Andalusian jewel and a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. Definitely make time to explore its stunning palaces, intricate courtyards, and lush gardens, all while enjoying panoramic views of the city and the Sierra Nevada mountains. For Seville, you’ve got the jaw-dropping Plaza de España, an architectural masterpiece that combines Renaissance and Moorish styles. Take a boat ride along the canal that surrounds the square, admire the colourful ceramic tiles, and soak up the majestic ambiance. Sadly I couldn’t convince my dad to get in a little boat with me but it did look fun… Maybe next time! We have a tasty trip to Andalusia that visits the very best this sunny region has to offer, check it out here!

Tallinn, Estonia

Estonia had never really been on my radar, and to be honest I hadn’t even heard of the country until I met my Estonian friend Elenor back in 2017! So when we were invited to her wedding in August of 2022 I jumped at the chance to check out this little corner of the world and I was honestly so pleasantly surprised! Nestled on the shores of the Baltic Sea, this vibrant city seamlessly blends medieval charm with modern allure. The perfectly preserved 13th-century buildings and narrow cobblestone streets instantly transport you back in time, and with the medieval walls and towers proving a picturesque backdrop, it’s the perfect place to explore on foot. Head to the vibrant Kalamaja district, known for its cool bars and music venues to hang out with the locals and fellow travellers. It’s also home to the Telliskivi Creative City, a complex of disused factories that now house more than 200 independent businesses! If you’re looking for something a little quieter, the city is lucky enough to be surrounded by calm sandy beaches and woodland trails that are easily accessible by bike or foot. We spent half a day at the beach and it was the perfect place to recharge my social batteries. Tallinn is also becoming a top destination for foodies! The thriving food scene has been steadily evolving and gaining recognition in recent years thanks to a growing number of trendy and upscale eateries, street food and food markets, microbreweries, and cocktail bars! I could honestly go on and on about my time visiting but to sum it up, If you want a true fairytale experience, with history, natural beauty, and tasty food, Tallinn is the one for you.

Transylvania, Romania

I was lucky enough to visit Transylvania with Untravelled Paths back in 2017, and who’d of thought it but five years later, I ended up landing a job working for them! – But that’s a story for another time… Let me start by saying that Transylvania’s allure goes far beyond the tales of Dracula! Exploring the region’s captivating towns and cities, each with its own unique charm was such a special experience. Brasov stole my heart with its picturesque streets, lined with colourful houses and adorned with ornate architecture. Sibiu on the other hand amazed me with its beautifully preserved medieval walls, stunning fortified churches, and those windows that look like peeping eyes! Then there’s Sighisoara, a name I still can’t pronounce but a town I’ll never forget… I could go on about medieval towns and rural villages but let me tell you what really took me by surprise, Transylvania’s natural landscapes! I’m not sure what I was expecting but it definitely wasn’t miles upon miles of pristine wilderness, an abundance of wildlife, giant looming Mountains, and glacial lakes which left me breathless! If you want to experience all of the above and more check out experiences in Romania here!

Lisbon, Portugal

Now Lisbon is a city that knows how to have a good time! With 290 days of sunshine per year and the temperature rarely dipping below 15.C, it’s the perfect city to experience year-round. It’s one of the few European cities I’ve visited where I genuinely feel safe walking around day or night and for that, I couldn’t recommend it enough for solo travellers and females alike. Picture yourself strolling through narrow, winding streets that lead to stunning squares bursting with life, the colourful titled facades and quaint tramcars add a touch of vintage charm to every corner. If you want to know how to spend 48 hours in Lisbon then check out my previous blog post here to help you make the most of this fun and vibrant city!

Lapland, Finland

Landing in Lapland was definitely a pinch-me moment that I never thought I would get to experience. From the moment I arrived, I had a bubble of excitement in me that stayed throughout my time here. My first stop was in Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus. The city is very much aimed at children and families which is great for them however, I am neither child nor family but a lone 30-year-old so activities where limited. However I did manage to find

Unveiling the Secrets to Budget-Friendly Adventures

Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter or planning your very first adventure, we all know that travel expenses can quickly add up. But fear not! With the right strategies and insider tips, you can embark on incredible journeys without breaking the bank. From finding the best flight deals to slashing accommodation costs, and even savouring local delicacies on a budget, we’ve got you covered. So let’s dive right in and discover the art of budget-friendly travel!

Be Flight Savvy

Being flight-savvy and finding ways to save money on airfare can make a significant difference in your travel budget. With the ever-changing landscape of airline pricing and deals, it’s crucial to equip yourself with money-saving strategies and insider tips to secure the best possible flight deals.

  • Utilise flight search engines: Take advantage of flight search engines like Skyscanner, Kayak, Google Flights, or Momondo. These platforms allow you to compare prices across multiple airlines and provide flexible search options, such as searching for the cheapest month or exploring nearby airports.
  • Consider budget airlines: Budget airlines often offer lower fares than full-service carriers. Keep an eye out for airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, or Wizz Air, which operate from various UK airports and offer competitive prices.
  • Sign up for fare alerts: Subscribe to email newsletters or set up fare alerts on flight search engines. By doing so, you’ll receive notifications when prices drop for your desired routes, allowing you to book the cheapest fares as soon as they become available. Both Skyscanner and Kayak offer price alert features and will send you a notification on your phone if you have the app.
  • Use incognito mode or clear cookies: When searching for flights, use incognito mode or clear your browsing cookies. Some travel websites track your searches and may increase prices based on demand. Using incognito mode helps prevent this and ensures you see the most accurate prices.
  • Track prices with Google Flights tracker: If you have specific dates already planned, utilising the Google tracker can be an excellent tool for monitoring price fluctuations during that period. By combining it with the price history tool, you can eliminate any uncertainties and confidently determine whether the current price is ideal for your travel plans. With these powerful tools at your disposal, you can make informed decisions and ensure that you’re getting the best possible deal.

Book in advance but also look for last-minute deals

Many tour operators offer early bird discounts or promotional rates for bookings made well in advance. Taking advantage of these discounts can result in significant cost savings on your tour experiences. Booking in advance also provides peace of mind, knowing that your travel tour experiences are confirmed. You can relax and look forward to your trip without the stress of last-minute arrangements. Tour operators may also offer last-minute deals or discounted prices to fill unsold spots on tours. If you’re flexible with your travel dates and have the ability to make spontaneous decisions, you can take advantage of these discounted rates, allowing you to save money on your tour experiences. We have an array of early bird and last-minute deals, which you can check out here!

Travel out of season

If you’re privileged enough to be able to travel out of season, you’ll discover that it not only offers unique experiences but also provides several money-saving benefits. During off-peak periods, prices for flights and accommodations tend to be significantly cheaper. Moreover, you’ll often encounter much fewer crowds, allowing you to enjoy popular attractions, landmarks, and destinations with greater ease and tranquility. This combination of reduced costs and a more relaxed atmosphere enables you to make the most of your travel budget while immersing yourself in unforgettable experiences! However if you are unable to travel out of season here are a couple tips on how to keep that price low:

  • Best time for Christmas and New Year – The optimal time for Christmas and New Year travel is when cheap fares begin to appear, typically around two to three weeks before the holidays. As Christmas approaches, prices tend to rise, so booking in advance is advisable. However, for New Year’s Day, we often observe last-minute price drops, particularly after Boxing Day. To maximise cost savings, consider flying on the actual day of the holiday itself. By utilising these strategies, you can make the most of your travel budget during the festive season.
  • School Holidays – You’ll find affordable flight options between November and February for school holidays, such as Easter, spring break, and summer holidays. It’s essential to monitor prices for these periods as they can fluctuate. Keep a close eye on your desired route to identify when prices drop, and be prepared to seize the opportunity and book your flights at the most favourable rates. By staying vigilant and proactive, you can make the most of the price variations and secure budget-friendly travel during school holiday seasons.

Take advantage of free activities and attractions

When it comes to saving money while travelling, one of the best strategies is to take advantage of free activities and attractions available in your destination. By incorporating these cost-free options into your itinerary, you can have a fulfilling travel experience without breaking the bank. Many cities have free walking tours, public parks, museums with discounted or free entry days, and cultural events that provide enjoyable experiences without breaking the bank. Consider researching if the destination offers city passes or tourist cards, which provide discounted or free entry to multiple attractions, including transportation benefits. Evaluating whether these passes align with your interests and budget can result in significant cost savings. Additionally, keep an eye out for free entry days or specific hours at museums and art galleries. Many cultural institutions offer these opportunities, allowing you to explore exhibits and learn about the destination’s history and art without spending on admission fees.

Eat like a local

When exploring a new destination, one of the most exciting aspects is indulging in the local cuisine. However, dining out while travelling can quickly eat away at your budget. That’s where eating like a local comes to the rescue!

  • Street food and food markets: Exploring local street food stalls and food markets can offer affordable and delicious options. From food carts selling local snacks to bustling markets with a variety of food vendors, you can sample a range of flavours while keeping your spending in check.
  • Free tapas with drinks: In certain regions, particularly in Spain, when you order a drink at a local bar, you may receive complimentary tapas (small plates of food) to accompany your drink. This is a traditional practice and can be an excellent way to sample local flavours without spending extra money on separate food orders.
  • Menu del día or Lunchtime specials: Many local restaurants and cafes offer a “menu del día” or daily set menu. These menus typically include a fixed price for a multi-course meal that often includes a starter, main course, dessert, and sometimes even a drink. The menu del día is usually offered during lunchtime and can be a great way to enjoy a full meal at a reasonable price.
  • Local bakeries and pastry shops: Instead of heading to expensive tourist-oriented cafes visit local bakeries and pastry shops for breakfast or a quick snack. These establishments often offer freshly baked goods, sandwiches, or pastries at lower prices compared to cafes targeting tourists.
  • Look for local recommendations: Engage with locals, whether through conversations or online forums, and ask for their recommendations on affordable eateries or hidden gems. Locals are often keen to share their favourite budget-friendly spots, providing you with insider tips for wallet-friendly dining experiences!

Be mindful of currency exchange rates and transaction fees

When exchanging currency or using credit cards abroad, be aware of the exchange rates and any transaction fees that may apply. Consider using a travel-friendly credit card with low foreign transaction fees or a prepaid travel card to avoid unnecessary charges. Revolut can be a convenient and cost-effective option. These cards are specifically designed for international use, offering features such as real-time currency conversion, the ability to hold multiple currencies, and the option to track and manage your spending through mobile apps. They often provide competitive exchange rates, allowing you to get more value for your money compared to traditional currency exchange methods or standard credit cards. Additionally, digital payment services like Revolut often provide added benefits such as security features, instant notifications for transactions, and the ability to lock/unlock your card in case of loss or theft. These services can streamline your financial transactions while traveling, giving you peace of mind and a convenient way to manage your money.

As this blog proves, a budget-friendly adventure doesn’t mean compromising on the quality or enjoyment of your travels. By implementing the secrets we’ve shared, you can maximise your savings and make the most of your money. From finding cheap flights and accommodations to exploring free activities, embracing local experiences, and taking advantage of discounts like ours, these tips and strategies empower you to create memorable journeys without breaking the bank. Happy travels!

A First-timers Guide to Montenegro

Home to one of Europe’s most enticing stretches of coastline, some of the most striking mountain scenery on the continent, and countless other spectacular gems, Montenegro is a country of incredible beauty and diversity. Not even 300km long, this tiny country packs in an extraordinary range of diverse landscapes, cultural influences, and must-see destinations. If you’re a first-time visitor to this enchanting country, you’re in for a treat! In this guide, we’ll take you on a journey through Montenegro’s must-see destinations, share insider tips, and provide practical advice to help you make the most of your time there.

When is the best time to visit Montenegro?

Montenegro’s climate varies between the coast and the mountains. Along the Adriatic, coastal Montenegro enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate with very warm summers and mild winters. The interior of the country however including the mountains has a sub-alpine climate with warm summers but bitterly cold winters sometimes dipping to as low as minus 26.C! Here’s an overview of the different seasons and what they offer:

  • Summer (June to August): This is the peak tourist season in Montenegro, particularly along the coastal areas. The weather is warm and ideal for beach activities, swimming, and water sports. However, popular destinations can get crowded, and accommodation prices tend to be higher. If you prefer a lively atmosphere and enjoy the beach scene, summer is a great time to visit.
  • Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October): These seasons offer pleasant weather with mild temperatures, making them ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, exploring national parks, and cultural sightseeing. The crowds are thinner compared to summer, and prices for accommodation and activities are generally more affordable. Springtime brings vibrant blooms and lush green landscapes, while autumn showcases beautiful autumn colours.
  • Winter (November to March): Montenegro’s mountainous regions, such as Durmitor and Kolasin, are popular for winter sports enthusiasts. If you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or winter activities, this is the perfect time to visit. The mountain resorts offer snowy landscapes and a cosy atmosphere. Coastal areas are quieter during winter, with some hotels and restaurants closing for the season.

Top things to do in Montenegro

Explore the Bay of Kotor: Encircled by majestic mountains, this fjord-like bay offers a mesmerising setting that will leave you in awe. Prepare to be transported back in time as you explore the medieval towns of Kotor, Perast, and Herceg Novi, each with its own unique charm and historical significance. This UNESCO-listed destination is a true jewel of Montenegro’s Adriatic coastline.

Visit the delicious Scepanovic Honey Farm: This family farm has a long history of beekeeping and boasts a huge colony of hives and bees in an area rich with wildflowers and honey plants at the foothill of the Bjelasica mountain range. The honey house is set in a small wooden cabin that’s filled with antique tools and bee-keeping equipment and features a long oak table in the centre laden with glass dishes and silver spoons ready for the tasting session. You’ll be given a brief tour of the hives by the friendly owner who will explain the beekeeping and honey production process. Afterward, you’ll head inside to taste some of their best products including mountain, linden, and meadow honey, a strong honey-laced liquor, and some honey wine. You can even purchase a few sweet treats from this year’s honey production–the shelves are stacked with endless jars of golden honey along with other organic honey products made on the farm including solid beeswax, thick honeycomb and pots of dried fruit soaked in honey.

Discover Durmitor National Park: Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Durmitor National Park, known for its majestic mountains, deep canyons, and glacial lakes. This extraordinary destination is a haven for nature enthusiasts, boasting majestic mountains, breathtaking canyons, and pristine glacial lakes. Lace-up your boots and embark on unforgettable hiking or trekking expeditions, traversing scenic trails that lead you through lush forests and reveal awe-inspiring vistas at every turn. Whether you choose to explore on foot or by bike, the untamed beauty of Durmitor National Park will leave you spellbound and craving more of Montenegro’s enchanting landscapes.

Experience the Tara River Bridge: Marvel at the stunning Tara River Bridge, an architectural masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stand in awe as you gaze at this magnificent structure that spans the breathtaking Tara River Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. Take a leisurely stroll across the bridge and be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the rugged canyon walls and the turquoise waters below. For an extra thrill, embark on a heart-pounding zip-lining experience, soaring above the canyon and embracing the adrenaline rush as you marvel at the stunning natural surroundings.

Enjoy Adventure Sports: Montenegro is a haven for adventure seekers, with its diverse landscapes providing a playground for a thrilling array of outdoor activities. Embark on epic hikes through rugged mountains, kayak along crystal-clear rivers and coastal marvels, conquer challenging rock walls, and soar through the skies with paragliding. Whether you’re captivated by the beauty of Durmitor National Park, the tranquility of Skadar Lake, or the dramatic cliffs of Kotor, Montenegro offers breathtaking views and adrenaline-pumping adventures at every turn. Embrace the opportunity to explore this remarkable destination and create unforgettable memories as you engage in exhilarating adventure sports amidst the stunning backdrop of Montenegro’s natural wonders.

What to eat and drink

Montenegrin cuisine reflects the country’s geography and rich history. Its heartland and Adriatic coast showcase an Italian influence seen in bread-making, cured meats, cheese, wine, and spirits. Levantine and Turkish influences shine through dishes like pita, burek, and baklava. Hungarian flavours such as goulash and continental treats like doughnuts and Vienna-style bread are also common. Geographically, the cuisine varies. Coastal areas embrace Mediterranean flavors with abundant seafood, while the north offers meat-based dishes featuring lamb, cicvar, polenta, and tripe. Traditional cooking methods like using an a bell, a clay dish covered with a bell and heated under ash and coals, are still practiced today, particularly for lamb and bread, and are absolutely delicious! Indulge in the finest seafood, including squid (ligne), scampi (škampi), octopus salad (salata od hobotnice), and mussels (dagnje) served with bouzzara sauce made from fried onions and tomatoes. For a truly authentic experience, ask for the catch of the day, ensuring the freshest flavours! Specialties like sea bass (brancin), sea bream (orada), and John Dory (kovač) are not to be missed. As you explore Montenegrin cuisine, be sure to sample burek, a flaky Turkish-style pastry filled with cheese, meat, or apple, often accompanied by thick yogurt. Don’t miss rakija, the national drink, known for its potency. Njeguši ham, air-dried in a small village beneath Mount Lovcen, offers a delicious treat. And to accompany your meal, indulge in Vranac, a deep, ruby red dry red wine cultivated in the Crmnica region.

How much time do I need to visit?

Ultimately, the duration of your visit to Montenegro depends on your personal preferences and the depth of exploration you desire. It’s always a good idea to plan your itinerary in advance and allocate sufficient time to fully immerse yourself in the beauty and cultural richness of this captivating country. If you enjoy a more relaxed and immersive travel experience, I highly recommend our 7-Night Montenegro Experience. On the other hand, if you prefer a faster-paced trip or you’re on a time-limited, you can cover more ground in a shorter period on our 4-Night Mini Montenegro Experience!

How much money do I need?

When preparing for your trip to Montenegro, it’s helpful to have an idea of how much spending money you should budget. While individual preferences and travel styles may vary, we can offer some guidelines to assist you. Keep in mind that these are rough estimates, and your actual expenses may differ based on personal choices. For a satisfying lunch, plan to spend around £8 per person. This should cover a decent meal at a local eatery. In the evening, if you’re looking for a more upscale dining experience, expect to pay approximately £12 per person. However, remember that the choice of restaurant and the dishes you order will influence the final cost. To keep your bill reasonable, we recommend exploring local wines, beers, or spirits instead of opting for expensive imported drinks. As a rough estimate, setting aside around £100 for lunch, drinks, and snacks for two people should be sufficient.
